Salzburg
Impressions-
There are many wonderful things about Salzburg: There is a lot of history here (its heyday was in the 17th century). It is very picturesque. The Mirabell Gardens are outstanding. There is fantastic music everywhere (think Mozart) and it is a short bus ride from the very beautiful Konigsee. You can sing your heart out on a "Sound of Music" tour, sit in the shade by the river or have a cold one at the Augustiner Braustuble. Overall, a very pleasant beginning to an amazing journey.
These are a few of my favorite things...
Mass at the Salzburg Dom - We arrived in Salzburg a day early so that we could attend services in Mozart's home church. It turned out that it was Pentecost and the Cathedral was Standing Room Only, crowded with pilgrims outfitted in their traditional Bavarian attire. The Dom is beautiful inside and the service and music were incredible. We felt blessed to have been a part of it.
The Konigsee - We were so glad that friends recommended this day trip! It was quite warm so it was nice to get into the country near the water. We had some trouble finding the #840 bus stop in Salzburg and since the TI was closed due to the holiday we had an issue with directions in Berchtesgaden. But thanks to a very nice woman in the bus station, we were able to find the trail to Konigsee. It was a beautiful walk, much of it along the creek, shaded and very pleasant. The Konigsee is a gorgeous, almost opalescent green lake, reflecting the surrounding mountains and the boat ride to St Bartholoma was like being in a postcard. At one point the boat stopped and the mate played a trumpet "duet" with the echoing cliffs. Pretty cool. Once at St Bartholoma, we grabbed a table in the shade at the Beer Garden and had one of the best meals of our entire trip. And very cold beer!
It was a perfect day! (An almost perfect day)...we were late to our Tour Orientation meeting...never be late.

Sound of Music Tour- Yes, it's corny but we had to do it. WARNING: These songs will be in your head for the rest of the trip!
Edelweiss...Edelweiss...Every morning you greet me...(more like every waking moment you torment me!) We signed up for our tour at the front desk of our hotel and a van picked us up the next morning and took us to the tour bus. It's a half day and the drive into the lakes area is quite nice. Edelweiss...Edelweiss...

Mirabell Gardens- These gardens, made famous here in the States by "The Sound of Music", are amazing! We spent a lot of time there in the early mornings with a cup of coffee and well into the evenings with a picnic dinner. So pleasant!
You should know...
- Salzburg Webcam, Visit Salzburg
- Restaurant Recommendation: The Beer Garden in St. Bartholoma on Konigsee! We also really liked Zirkelwirt in Salzburg's old town.
- Photo op: The Old Town is flood lit. This makes great photo ops at twilight (not too dark).
- Plan early if you want to attend a concert. We didn't, and missed out.
- The Sacher Torte is not as good as you remember...but the Mozart Balls are pretty tasty!
- WOW! The boat ride to St Bartholoma on Konigsee and evenings in the Mirabell Gardens.
