Bavaria
Impressions-
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Fussen. The town itself was charming and clean and very Bavarian, without being over-the-top. Town squares were busy with people having a gelato or strudel and kids playing in the fountains. We even had an Oom-Pah Band serenade us at dinner! The area was beautiful, and the Castles, though touristy, were worth seeing. Fussen would be a great base for further exploration of the Bavarian countryside and our hotel, Altstadthotel sum Hechten, was a wonderful little retreat.
These are a few of my favorite things...
Biking Around the Countryside - Our Tour Host, the Marvelous Martin had secured a deal for bikes for any of us who wanted to rent them. What a great idea! It was the perfect way to get around this amazing (relatively flat) countryside. We rode over to the Tegelberg Gondola in hopes of riding up and hiking down, but alas, it is cash only and we didn't have enough with us. Plan B. Ride around some more. We found a local Art Fair. Yay! Shopping! (Suddenly I was glad we didn't have a lot of cash with us!) Made our way to the St Colomon Chapel and eventually ended up at the Castles. A very pleasant day!
Mad King Ludwig's Castles- The castles were touristy but interesting. We got our vouchers from the front desk at the hotel, rode our bikes over and essentially walked right in. Ahhh, the beauty of traveling in June. The views from Neuschwanstein and from Mary's Bridge are fantastic! Edelweiss...Edelweiss...Every morning you greet me...
- Webcam, Tourist Info
- Restaurant Recommendation: La Perla was very good. Complete with Oom-Pah band across the square.
- Photo Op: The St. Colomon Chapel is nice during the day and the High Castle in Fussen is floodlit at night, nice subjects.
- Rent bikes to get around! Martin nailed this one!
- Buy your souvenirs here. We found Fussen to have far more reasonable prices than the other areas.
- WOW! Sitting by a fountain in the square eating cookies from Kurcafe cafe/bakery.
