The Alpe di Siusi
Impressions-
The Alpe di Siusi may well be the most beautiful place on earth. This is what we had always imagined summer in the Alps to be:
Snow-capped mountains, wildflowers, lush green meadows, streams and forests, with the sounds of cowbells and cuckoo birds carried on the breeze. Our day began perfectly with clear blue skies and puffy white clouds. It ended perfectly with lightning, thunder and a downpour. In between were gorgeous views at every turn and a tasty lunch at the Plattkofelhutte. We would have loved more time here in this magical place, so much more to see! I guess I don't need to say that The Alpe di Siusi is most definitely on top of the "we must go back" list.

These are a few of my favorite things...
Hiking the High Route: Panorama / Plattkofelhutte Loop- This scenic loop trail on the Alpe di Siusi begins in Compatsch at the Panorama lift and is pretty much an all day affair. From the top of Panorama, head toward the Mahlknechthutte and then up the high ridge trail to Plattkofelhutte. Stop there for lunch and then hike down to Williamshutte and take the Florian lift down to Saltria. From there, you can close the loop back to Compatsch via shuttle bus, but we opted to continue our walk. We were so glad we did. The views continued to be outstanding and we got caught in an amazing thunderstorm. This was hands down, the best day of our trip! Words can't begin to do it justice, there are not enough superlatives. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves...
Animals of the Italian Alps- We didn't see much in the way of wildlife, but there were plenty of domestic animals to keep us company! We've included a short "Sounds of the Alps" video from the Ridge Trail to add to the experience...
Wildflowers! We don't pretend to know the names of all of these flowers (dandelions we know) . Suffice it to say they were abundant and they were beautiful! We couldn't have timed it any better! Edelweiss...Edelweiss...Every morning you greet me...
You should know...
- LOVE this Panoramic Webcam Alpe di Siusi Info
- Restaurant Recommendation: The Plattkofelhutte for lunch. It's quite a hike, but worth the effort on so many levels!
- Photo Tip: Make sure to bring an extra battery and memory cards! Everything here is a photo op...
- Note the schedule for the last bus leaving Siusi for Bolzano. It's easy to lose track of time and it would be an expensive taxi!
- Next time, we'd skip Bolzano and stay in Castelrotto, Siusi, or in one of the small inns or B&Bs on Alpe di Siusi.
- WOW! Hearing a cuckoo bird for the first time while on the ridge trail. We both automatically looked at our watches!
